England's Justin Rose fired a 63 to claim a share of the lead after the third round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.
The 2013 US Open winner carded seven birdies, including four in the last six holes, to finish nine-under par.
The 35-year-old landed several superb shots including a 10-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole and a 40-foot birdie putt to finish.
Rose said afterwards he believes he can win his second major title at the US PGA Championship next week.
American Jim Furyk also returned a 69 to sit joint-top of the leaderboard.
Ireland's Shane Lowry is two off the lead and Ian Poulter is four behind after carding a 65; the Englishman recording seven birdies and two bogeys.
World number two Jordan Spieth has much work to do if he is to claim a victory on Sunday and replace Northern Ireland's world number one Rory McIlroy at the top of the rankings. The 22-year-old is nine shots off the lead.
