Cook and Broad share their surprise after England regain the Ashes

  • England captain Alastair Cook and man-of-the-match Stuart Broad spoke on Saturday after the side's innings victory over Australia at Trent Bridge gave them an unassailable 3-1 win in the Ashes series.

"I didn't think we were quite ready to win the Ashes at the beginning of it because I thought you really needed a group of players who have been match-hardened, but the guys out there have surprised me. We've won really critical moments and players have really stepped up which shouldn't surprise me but it has. They've really made that big step from guys with little experience to kind of match-winners for England and hardened professionals and hardened players for England. When the pressure's on in this game, I know it sounds a bit silly when you're 2-1 up but there was a lot of pressure on that first morning. When I talk about opportunities, you don't want to let them go by. Every one of those guys can be very proud of the way they've handled the pressure."

    SOUNDBITE: Stuart Broad

"There were quite a few doubts coming into this series whether we could cope with the power of Australia but I think that trip to Spain did us the world of good because, yes we had some fun and we played a bit of golf but we also talked about how we wanted to go about playing our cricket and it was very much about us. I think it's a dangerous place, as a sports team, when you focus too much on what the opposition are doing and if you looked too much at Australia they've obviously had an amazing year so far, really quick bowlers and a very powerful team. But we made a conscious decision to make everything about us and talk about our strengths, talk about how we want to go about things and I think that probably paid off throughout this series because when the pressure has come on, Cookie's asked the guys to play to go to your strengths, to play your way. If that means grinding out an hour without scoring, do that. If that means counter-attack, like Moeen Ali's done on numerous occasions, do that. And I think when players get given that responsibility and built up like that, you can do anything. In my wildest dreams, I didn't think we'd be 3-1 up here at Trent Bridge."
