JORDAN SPIETH: “We all want Rory back”

Friday, August 07 2015 by SNTV
  • Jordan Spieth said on Wednesday (5th August) that he is looking to recover from his Open Championship disappointment and seize the world number one at this week's WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

With world number one and defending champion Rory McIlroy out due to injury, Jordan Spieth will be the top-ranked player in the field when the WGC Bridgestone Invitational gets underway on Thursday at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

The second-ranked Spieth has four victories this season - two majors - as well as eight other top-10 results. He missed out on the playoff at the Open Championship by a stroke, ending his Grand Slam bid. The 22-year-old Texan will tee off on Thursday on the first hole at 14:15 local time alongside Open Championship victor Zach Johnson.

Last year here Spieth was unable to break 70 and closed in 49th place at five over par - 20 strokes behind McIlroy.

"Tee to green I think it's a really good prep for next week and the greens putt similar - these may even have a little more slope on them. So I think it's really good major prep but at the same time this is a World Golf Championship, this is a huge event, this is one everyone wants to have on their resume and there's certainly other goals that come out of trying to win this week too for me personally and so ultimately we're working really hard for this one to try and, try and grab the number one slot (in the world rankings)."

"Obviously we all want Rory back ASAP. I saw the video he posted today (on Instagram) too and it looks like he's making tremendous progress so hopefully he's back soon. To not make it, to not have a chance to at least fight for it himself - which is what we all want - and it would be really, really incredible at the end of this week if I was able to hold that trophy and have that position (in the rankings) going forward."

"I'm hoping to kind of prove, coming off this last major, that I've got like kind of a, little bit of revenge that I need to get out from having control of the Open Championship with two holes to go and not closing it out. That leaves kind of a bad taste in my mouth just not because of the third (major victory) in a row but strictly because you don't get many opportunities to contend in a major, in a Open Championship at St. Andrews in your life so to have that chance and to feel like I was the one in control and to not finish it is a tough feeling and it was a tough feeling on that flight home - especially with Zach (Johnson) and the (Claret) Jug there. I wish that it was in my possession there and not his but, yeah, re-establishing goals first and foremost this week, also got a big one next week, there's also a FedEx Cup winner at the end of the Tour Championship and there's a number one spot up for grabs so as long as I look at it that way there's still a lot to work hard for and to play for and reset."
