Lancaster 'open minded' regarding World Cup squad selection

Wednesday, August 05 2015 by SNTV
  • England rugby head coach Stuart Lancaster says a decision on whether to select Danny Cipriani for the 2015 Rugby World Cup will be made purely on rugby grounds and stated on Tuesday (4th August), "he's not been charged with anything, so he's here as a bone fide member of the squad and will be judged accordingly."

Lancaster also revealed he was "not surprised" by Australia's form in the Rugby Championship, and added that Pool A in the Rugby World Cup was "extremely tough".

(Question: Has the training camp in Denver helped selection for the World Cup squad?)

"Yeah I mean we are still a month away from naming the World Cup squad, so we still have some time to go before we do that. I was pretty open-minded and still am. There were definitely some players who performed extremely well, there were very few that didn't if I'm being honest, so the decisions become harder, not easier, because everyone turned up and pitched up. Very few training injuries, so as a consequence you're constantly juggling this 40-odd man squad in a challenging environment, but it was great really, a lot of players put their hand up."

(Question: Having watched Australia in the Rugby Championship, have you been surprised by their progress?)

"Not really no. I think when we beat them in November I thought they were excellent when we played against them and it was a very good win for us. They gave us a real hard time in defence and challenged us and if you add on the quality of players that are now fit and available for them. Michael Cheika has obviously had longer to work with them, he's got an established coaching team, they've focussed more on the set piece, so you can see them growing as a team. So they're a top quality team with a high calibre of players across the board, so I'm not surprised how well they're playing."

(Question: Has Australia's improvement made your Rugby World Cup pool even more difficult when you consider there is England, Wales and Australia?)

"And Fiji. Honestly, you watch these games from the Pacific Cup. It is an extremely tough pool, I think we all recognise that when it was drawn, now we're boiling down to it, it is going to come down to the wire in those games."
