  • Intro:

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal beat Fabio Fognini 7-5, 7-5 and wins the Hamburg Open for the second time on Sunday (2nd August).

    Script:

Fabio Fognini was trying to become the first player to beat Rafa Nadal three times on clay in a year.

The two wins this year for the Italian still left the head-to-heads at 4-2 Nadal.

And the final here in Hamburg was going with serve in the first.

A tiebreak looked imminent before Nadal found a winner taking the set 7-5.

Nadal served for a 4-1 lead in the second but Fognini turned the match before wasting two set points in the 10th game.

The Italian fought back in the second set and at 3-all on the Nadal serve found the break.

Despite Fognini having a serve for the second, he was here at match point down.

The Italian went long as Nadal claims his 47th clay court title.

Nadal showing afterwards he's still got the fight to rise back up the rankings.

"It was an important week for me, deciding to play here after (a) tough Wimbledon.... (it) was a big call to come here and play good tennis and have a good result. Finally that happened, so very, very important for me. Five-hundred points is very important title, one of the most prestigious titles in the history of our sport on this surface, on clay, so just very happy. It's a great victory for me."
