"It is a spectacular place with these beaches in the heart of Rio. It's a unique place in the world. From a technical point of view, it's a tough circuit which demands a lot from athletes. Climbing up on cycling is tough. And the weather does the rest. I am sure that we were all very tired at the 10 km running race. And the running race is tougher than London 2012, which is a better course but very different. I had a good day and, hopefully, I will have this same good day next year.

"At the end of the day I have been in many waters that have been disgusting. It's all part and parcel. If I get ill now then so be it. I'll let the Rio Federation know that I was ill. Apart from that you just have to get on with it. If they say the water is fine then you have got to take their word for it at the end of the day, haven't you?"

"It's a really tough course. The group we had worked really well together and we kept it smooth, which made it a lot easier, I think. It's a tough course, the heat made a difference as well but, like I said, I think I got the top ten so over the moon."
