  • Intro:

Audi's Edoardo Mortara won the third DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) race of his career on Saturday (1st August), going from pole position to checquered flag in the first of the weekend's two races at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria.

    Script:

The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria was the venue for round five of the DTM season on Saturday and in the first race of the weekend, Italy's Edoardo Mortara qualified fastest and took pole position for Audi.

Championship leader Jamie Green was next door to him on the front row and the Briton got the better start, snatching first place going into the first corner.

However, just as Green was preparing to take advantage of the clean air in front of him, the Audi driver suffered gearbox failure and was forced to retire.

It would be no points for the fourth race in a row for Green.

Mortara quickly regained the lead and was followed by another Briton, Paul di Resta, and Germany's Pascal Wehrlein.

Wehrlein muscled his way past his Mercedes HWA AG team-mate, but Mortara got away and built up a two-second lead, despite Wehrlein setting the fastest lap time of the race.

Mortara took the chequered flag for his third career DTM win.

Wehrlein finished second, ahead of Di Resta.

The real winner though was Wehrlein, whose 18 points took him to the top of the standings at the expense of Green.

Green will be hoping for better luck when the second and final race of round five takes place on Sunday.
