Anderson 'surprised' by amount of movement in pitch

  • Intro:

England's top wicket taker James Anderson and Australian top scorer Chris Rogers reflect on the opening day of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday (29 July).

    Script:

    SOUNDBITE (English): James Anderson, England:

    Q. Were you secretly hoping that Alistair (Cook, England captain) would lose (the toss) and you would get to bowl?

"Not all all, no. We were hoping to win and bat, we thought it looked a good pitch. We weren't expecting anywhere near the amount of seam movement that we got early on, so it was fortunate for us. I think the conditions we had throughout the day, with a bit of rain around, the lights were on for a lot of the day, that definitely played into our hands as well."

    SOUNDBITE (English): James Anderson, England:

"I thought we all bowled really well today. Obviously we were disappointed after Lord's and we've all gone away and worked really hard at the things we need to work on. I've done some work with Ottis Gibson (England bowling coach) in the last few days which has really helped, especially after a game where you don't get any wickets. You start thinking about the things you can do better and it was good to do some work in the nets with him and get some rewards out on the field."

SOUNDBITE (English): James Anderson, England (on day two):

"It's a very typical English pitch so hopefully that will help us. If you get in on it there are definitely scoring opportunities there, and if you bowl well you will also create chances. It will be hard work for us but I think if the sun's out that will help and hopefully a couple of our guys can go on to get big scores."

SOUNDBITE (English): Chris Rogers, Australia (on how he managed to score more runs than his team mates):

"Probably a little bit of luck to be honest. It was one of those innings, I think, when you just had to fight for everything you get and that's probably been a characteristic of my career, I think. It was tough conditions, I don't think we probably expected them to be as hard as they were. The cloud came over and it (the ball) swung, it seamed and I just managed to get through. The others got some good balls and then probably some disappointing shots as well."
