  • Cricket South Africa Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat on Tuesday (28th July) paid tribute to former international captain Clive Rice.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Haroon Lorgat, Chief Executive of Cricket South Africa:

"Very sad when we lose anybody from the family. I think in his case he battled for some while with illness. And it's a sad day for all of us. He was the first captain, he's special in Cricket South Africa's history, he's been a phenomenal player in his time and we mourn the day that we see him passing on."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Haroon Lorgat, Chief Executive of Cricket South Africa:

"He raised the standard, he played a key part in the early years of unity. He was the captain that led the team to India on the Friendship Tour, so he certainly put a marker in the turf."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Haroon Lorgat, Chief Executive of Cricket South Africa:

"Well, we've got a clear line in the sand in that we've got a policy that any player who is post-unity - and Clive Rice was the first captain so he would qualify without a shadow of doubt to be respected in the form of the Proteas wearing a black armband. Anybody before then, before '91, whether it's from whichever South African cricket board that existed, we do not wear a black armband. We respect them in different ways. We honour their passing on in different ways, but not by means of wearing a black armband."
