Nadal, Robredo amongst early Hamburg winners

  • Third seed Roberto Bautista Agut and Benoit Paire won through to the second round of the Hamburg Open on Tuesday (28 July).

    Rafael Nadal won his first competitive match since he crashed out of Wimbledon earlier this month, beating Fernando Verdasco in the opening round of the Hamburg Open on Tuesday (28 July).

    The first round of the Hamburg clay court tournament kicked off on Tuesday.

    The tournament is normally part of the European clay season, however earlier in the year swapped to a grass court event.

    Roberto Bautista Agut made the first move against Borna Coric, taking a break to lead 5-3.

    The World No 23 saw out the set before finishing off the Croatian with a solitary break in the second.

    Bautista Agut now plays Britain's Aljaz Bedene in the second round.

    Elsewhere Benoit Paire continued his form after last week's win at the Swedish Open.

    Here defeating Phillip Kohlschreiber 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

    Into the evening session - Fernando Verdasco giving Rafa Nadal a rough ride.

    Verdasco took the first set, yet Nadal hit back taking the second 6-1.

    Again Nadal led 5-1, and did close that out to take it 6-1.

    Finally, Tommy Robredo came through against Germany 18-year-old Alexander Zverev in three sets.

    Robredo will next play Benoit Paire.
