    Argentinian Giants River Plate advanced to the final of the Copa Libertadores after battling to a 1-1 draw against Guarani of Paraguay in Asuncion on Wednesday.

    River took a big step towards their first final appearance since 1996 - after second-half goals from Gabriel Mercado and Rodrigo Mora earned them a 2-0 advantage from last week's opening meeting in Buenos Aires.

    On the night it ended with honours even.

    After a scoreless first half Fernando Fernandez gave the home side a glimpse of hope in the 61st minute to give his side a 1-0 lead - 2-1 behind on aggregate.

    But with just ten minutes remaining Tabare Viudez played provider for Lucas Alario to score a sensational goal - and bring the scores back level.

    So, 1-1 on the night and River go through to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

    They will take on either Internacional of Brazil in the final - or Mexico's Tigres, who go head to head on Thursday (July 23).
