Early reaction from the third round of the Open

Monday, July 20 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Eddie Pepperell, Rickie Fowler, Graham DeLaet and Phil Mickelson speak following the third round of The Open at St Andrews on Sunday (19th July).

    Script:

Eddie Pepperell, Eight under par (on his round):

"I feel pretty good. Yeah, I mean, obviously to finish double bogey-par is disappointing, I suppose, around this golf course, but ultimately my swing was in -- I didn't hit the right shot off the 17th tee, and that's a problem with my swing, quite frankly. I need to go and work on that this afternoon and make sure I can stand up on that tee tomorrow and feel confident again to hit the right shot. But all in all, if somebody would have said you take 66 and be in this position after three days, I probably would have taken it."

Eddie Pepperell, Eight under par (on improving his driving and having a go at the final round):

"I don't feel that comfortable with my driver, put it that way, so I feel like I'm going to have to improve that a little bit come tomorrow. Having said that, you haven't got to drive the ball immaculately around this golf course, you just can't hit a bad shot on a couple of holes quite frankly. My putting was good today and it's going to be the guy with the hottest putter, depending a little bit on the conditions, that's going to come closest to winning this tournament because you can have a lot of birdie opportunities. If I can keep putting well and keep the pace that I've got on the greens, then I feel like I can make enough birdies to certainly give it a run tomorrow."

Rickie Fowler, Seven under par (asked what he changed today from the opening two rounds):

"It seemed like my speed wasn't dialled in, which today was a lot better, other than 17. I ran one by from long distance, but I just trusted it a little bit more today, made one putt and kind of went from there. The first two rounds, Thursday and Friday, it seemed like I'd get the read right and speed was off, or I'd get the read wrong and speed was good. So just a bad combination, and then you get it going the wrong way in the wind, and it's tough to really build confidence. Actually it was nice to get a couple today early and then get going."

Graham DeLaet, Four under par (assessing his round):

"Yeah, I played well today. I feel like I played the exact same as I have the three days. I was just kind of able to hole a few putts today, and that's the difference, obviously. A little disappointed. I don't know how anyone has ever made par on that 17th hole. It's such a beast, but you know, I felt like I played it well today, and it's just such a hard putt up that slope and it was a little slower than I thought and made bogey there, and that was really the only kind of blemish, but I played well."
