Cook frustrated and Clarke praises Johnson as Australia level series

  • Intro:

Australia dealt England a humiliating Ashes defeat at Lord's on Sunday (July 19), winning by 405 runs to level the five-match series and deliver a wounding defeat from which England may struggle to recover.

    Script:

    Alastair Cook, England captain

"It's incredibly frustrating. I said before the game, the last three times we have gone three up in the series, we haven't managed to play anywhere near the standard we played in that game in the following game. And, for whatever reason, I cannot put my finger on it. We spoke about it. We spoke about the second time and the third time. We had an opportunity here obviously to build on Cardiff. Just like we had the opportunity to build on Lord's against New Zealand. And we haven't taken it. I think it's probably a case of - you can talk all you want but it's down to the players - the next time we have the opportunity - we should just do it. It's not always about talking about a plan."

    Alastair Cook, England captain

    On Mitchell Johnson

"He bowled pretty well in this game. But as I said, in this game, as a batter you have to have your plans for each individual bowler. So that's something that I sure we will have a look at in the next couple of days."

    Alastair Cook, England captain

    On Ben Stokes dismissal

"Not great cricket was it? If he had that time again he would have run differently. He'll only do it once."

    Alastair Cook, England captain

    On losing the toss

"It's not quite as simple as that. This is like now the 15th out of 16th or something like that. It is amazing how many times this has happened. But yes - look - it was an advantage definitely in this game to win the toss but I am not going to sit here and take anything away from Australia. They out fielded, batted and bowled us - like we did to them in Cardiff. It's beautifuly poised for Edgbaston. We know how important the first two days there will be."

    Michael Clarke, Australia captain

(on whether this result is one of the most comprehensive performances he's been involved with as captain)

"Jeez, I haven't thought about it. It's a good win, there's no doubt about it, but there are not too many bad ones. As I said earlier, I would have been happy to win that game late tomorrow, to be honest, the key was to try and give ourselves enough time to bowl England out, once we put 500 on the board, had a 500 lead. Fortunately it worked out, we could have a couple of those before lunch."

    Michael Clarke, Australia captain

    (on Mitchell Johnson's performance)

"It's the same as it's been my whole career with Mitch. I've always seen how good a player - how good an athlete he's been, to be honest and I think today was a good example, that run out (of Ben Stokes) in the field. He's bowling the ball, we've all seen over his career, and his batting's the same, I think he's striking the ball really well with the bat, so Mitch is a good weapon to have in any team, that's for sure. I think I've probably utilised him a little bit better in this Test match than I did in Cardiff, but again, he's fit and strong so he can bowl long spells if required, or he can come in and bowl in short bursts, like he did today, so... I think the whole attack deserves credit, because the way they bowl, that allows me to be able to use Mitchell the way I did in this game."
