Joint leaders reflect on day three of the Open Championship

Monday, July 20 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Joint leaders Paul Dunne, Louis Oosthuizen and Jason Day reflect on day three of the Open Championship, and look ahead to their final rounds.

    Script:

Paul Dunne, joint leader at 12-under-par (on whether he can win the Open)

"yes it's really (unbelievably) leading the Open but I can easily believe that I've shot the three scores that I've shot. If we were playing an amateur event here, I wouldn't be too surprised by the scores that I've shot. It's just lucky that it happens to be in the biggest event in the world. Hopefully I can do it again tomorrow. Whether I do or not, I'll survive either way."

(Q: did you say at the beginning that it's a little surreal (leading the Open)

"yes it is. It's something I'll look back on and think is cool but mid tournament I'm just going to try and focus on playing my shots and getting ready for tomorrow and just playing the best that I can't really.

Paul Dunne, joint leader at 12-under-par (on whether an amateur can win the Open)

"I don't see why not. I'm well capable on shooting the scores that I need to win if everyone else doesn't play their best so whether it happens or not, I can't really control. I can just go out and play my game and see where it leaves me at the end of the day. But hopefully I play great again and post a good number."

Louis Oosthuizen, joint leader at 12-under-par (on the benefits of being a previous winner)

"I think for myself, confidence wise, knowing that I've done it before at this golf course I will take a lot from that. But there is a lot of golf that needs to be played. I mean, Jordan (Spieth) is obviously looking at making history so you can expect him to fire on early and to really be up there. Jason (Day) is playing unbelievable (golf) so there are so many players who can still win this. I think it's going to be one of the tightest Opens."

Louis Oosthuizen, joint leader at 12-under-par (do you think Dunne can win as an amateur)

"Absolutely. He has played, the way he played today, definitely. I think obviously that everyone within three or four shots has got a really good chance of winning and it's all about composure now and tomorrow, really, your thought process on how you're going to handle the pressure. I think everyone playing for a Major Championship gets a bit nervous and a lot of people, that drives them to play even better. So tomorrow is going to be a good day, but a really tough day."

Jason Day, joint leader at 12-under-par (on potential winners)

"Anyone can win this event. You just don't know how the weather is going to be, how the leaders are going to fair. Sometimes playing with a person that's not playing that great can affect you as well. There are a number of factors that can affect the player playing tomorrow. I can't afford to think about other people. I can't afford to look at their scores or see how they're playing. If they're charging up the leaderboard on the front nine. I've just got to be patient and just let it happen. That's what I've learnt over the last few years "

Jason Day, joint leader at 12-under-par (on Jordan Spieth's chances)

"He's a heavy favourite tomorrow, just being one shot back. Everyone knows it, but once again, seeing him today on the twelfth hole holing that putt. He's going to be up there regardless of what I do. The only thing I can do is go out there and try and play the best that I can and fortunately for me I shot five under (today) and am at the top of the leaderboard. I kind of have to do the same tomorrow."

Jason Day, joint leader at 12-under-par (on what Tiger Woods said to him)

"As we were walking off the green yesterday, he just said to me 'Go get it done. You know what you need to do, like always.' To be able to play golf against one of the best, arguably one of the best in the world, or the best in the world. The winner of 14 Majors and I think 79 PGA Tour events and countless victories around the world. To hear that advice come from that person, it gives you a boost of confidence just to know that you're doing the right things and that someone that good really believes in your skills."
