Friday, July 17 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

18-time grand slam champion Martina Navratilova of the Czech Republic and Sania Mirza -- who won the 2015 Wimbledon women's doubles crown with her partner Martina Hingis of Switzerland -- host a tennis masterclass at the Indian No. 1's academy in Hyderabad.

SOUNDBITE (English) Martina Navratilova, 18-time grand slam winner:

"Well, I think Sania's just put tennis on the map again (in India), because it was big in the 60s and 70s and it's kind of a bit of a lull (at the moment), but still, I think it's the second biggest sport in India, it seems to me. And Sania is stepping on the heels of cricket, perhaps, particularly for girls - I don't think they're thinking about being cricket players but they certainly would be thinking about being tennis players. And boys as well, I mean tennis is a great sport and I think the effect we will see five to ten years from now. But you see it right here, these kids want to play, have a good time. They have a smile on their faces, they're very eager, and you never know whether it's going to take them, but anytime you can introduce the sport to more people, and also make them follow the sport, the better - and Sania's definitely done that in India."

SOUNDBITE (English) Sania Mirza, 2015 Wimbledon women's doubles champion:

"It was a dream for our family, to have this (academy). I mean, tennis has given me a lot in my life, everything that I am is because of tennis and this is the only thing that I know, and everything I know and have learnt we'd like to give back as a family to the country and to the people of this country. And hopefully this will keep the legacy of tennis going, and hopefully we'll have more than one person playing at the top WTA tournaments of the world."
