England captain Alastair Cook says he expects Australia to respond after his side's 169-run win in the first Ashes Test in Cardiff.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alastair Cook, England captain (Q: What's your reaction to that win?)

"We played pretty well and you know we got ahead of the game early on. We made I thought a brave decision to bat first, it was the right one, but you can make the decision to bowl, the overhead is there and a little bit of drizzle, but the wicket was certainly quite dry and we thought the fourth innings would be a lot harder than the first innings, even though the cloud hung around a little bit longer than we thought it was going to. But to get 430 on that wicket, obviously credit to Joe (Root) in particular and the guys and the way we went about our business the other two and a half days with the ball was fantastic.

"Well it was really important for this group of players to show that we can compete with Australia. I remember sitting here before the Test match and everyone was talking about what happened in the previous series and I was getting a little bit frustrated, because there is nothing we can do about that. But as a group of players to come and start the series well was important, because you know that it shows if we do the basics well and we play with that kind of attitude then we can put Australia under pressure. It's not going to work every time and I'm sure Australia will bounce back and put us under pressure at certain times, but if we can go out there and show off our talent, we keep talking about that and have the guys to go out and express it, then we're a dangerous side."
