Tricky wind grounds Red Bull Extreme Alps Challenge

  • Intro:

A tricky wind on Saturday meant progress was slow for the leading athletes in the Red Bull Extreme Alps challenge.

    Script:

The Red Bull Extreme Alps Challenge - a race by foot and paraglider over the Alps to Monaco - failed to hit its expected heights on Saturday.

The leader going into the day, Chrigel Maurer, hoped to fly over the Matterhorn into France, but the wind was blowing in the wrong direction from his takeoff spot

He had no option but to head back down into the valley.

Second placed Paul Guschlbauer had a similar problem.

He climbed 3500 metres to the launch spot, only to land back on Italian soil.

The finish line is still 350 kilometres away - a long walk with or without those paragliders.
