Pentathlon world champions crowned in Berlin

    Ukrainian Pavlo Tymoshchenko is the new men's world champion, Germany's Lena Schoneborn is the women's world champion, while the Czech Republic won the mixed relay at UIPM World Championship finals in Berlin.

    Ukraine's Pavlo Tymoshchenko took gold in the men's individual event at the Senior World Championships in Berlin.

    He had to come from behind to become world champion, he was 31st after the first discipline, swimming, with Egypt's Amro El Geziry in front.

    Tymoshchenko was 15th in the fencing, but launched himself into the upper reaches with a second-placed finish in the riding.

    He then overcame a 27 second deficit in the combined to take gold.

    Defending champion Aleksander Lesun, of Russia came second and another Ukrainian, Andriy Fedechko completed the podium who all qualify for the Rio olympics as a result. 

    The women's title went to Germany's Lena Schoneborn, to the delight of the home crowd. The 2008 Olympic champion also had to fight her way though the field. China's Qian Chen took silver, with Brazil's Yane Marques in third. They too will be in Rio.

    The mixed team relay title went to the Czech Republic, Natalie Dianova and Jan Kuf were four seconds behind Russian pair Anna Burjak and Maxsim Kustov heading ino the combined but they fought back to be crowned world champions.
