Script:
In the shadow of the Andes, Chile scaled the heights by winning their first Copa América after 99 years of trying.
The vociferous Estadio Nacional crowd poured out on to the streets of Santiago to celebrate with Jorge Sampaoli's men, who travelled by open-top bus to meet President Bachelet at La Moneda Palace.
Arsenal forward Alexis Sánchez scored the winning spot-kick with a scuffed Panenka.
The hosts defeating Argentina 4-1 in a penalty shootout after the final finished goalless.
Arturo Vidal and co. were greeted by a sea of red with the odd splash of blue.
The Argentines may have been in the minority but they would have taken the lead through Sergio Aguero were it not for the reflexes of Claudio Bravo.
Sánchez only netted one goal in six games in the competition but the 26-year-old almost made up for his ineffectiveness with a volley that flashed across the face of goal.
Gonzalo Higuain missed the last clear chance of normal time and the Argentina striker was made to rue his profligacy in the shootout.
A subdued Lionel Messi was kept quiet by Gary Medel although the Albiceleste captain did his bit from the spot.
But misses from Higuain -- the scapegoat of the World Cup final defeat to Germany last summer -- and Éver Banega proved decisive.
That left Chile to etch their name on the Copa América for the maiden time while Argentina's 22 year wait for senior silverware continues.
With the colossal Andes as their witness, Chile achieved the biggest triumph in their history.
