No Cummins and no Pattinson a 'backward step' - Thomson

Friday, July 03 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

England players Ben Stokes and Steve Finn - along with former Australian bowler Jeff Thomson - look ahead to the start of the Ashes.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English), Jeff Thomson (on England's appointment of Trevor Bayliss):

"I was a little bit surprised, I suppose people back home are - they probably thought, 'why isn't there an English guy over here to do the same job?' I think what he will do, I don't know you can ask these guys here more, he will be quiet, sit in the background. I don't like coaches who try and tell the players how to play. Especially like him - he played probably in the eighties I think Trevor would have finished. He's a quiet player, batter, bit of a bowler. But he'll go about it that way - these guys are the ones on the field, they will sort it out themselves. You've just got to help them if they are struggling you give them advice, if they are not you just pump them up and let them go."

    SOUNDBITE: (English), Jeff Thomson:

Question: Would you have brought (Pat) Cummins and (James) Pattinson instead of say Siddle?

"Instead of Siddle? Yes. Nothing against Peter Siddle but you are talking about two guys who have got a bag of tricks. They've got much more in the bag than he has and they've got a bit more pace than him too. So they are not here and that's that. But I thought that was the one backward step. "
