  • Intro:

SNTV looks at the Iraqi Premier League that is currently being played in the exhausting summer heat, as the players also observe the fasting month of Ramadan.

    Script:

The Iraq football season should have finished weeks ago but because of fixture problems it's still going and the heat is near unbearable. Al Shorta train at night but almost all matches are played in the day because of a lack of floodlit stadiums.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Anderson Nicolau, physical trainer:

"Just here in Iraq we keep the games low-key - and especially in this month - because sometimes it is 43, 44 degrees and the weather is not good. The Shorta team played before in Najaf at 4.30 pm this is not good for players because we don't keep the high-intensity of the game, especially now it is Ramadan because the players do not eat for a long time. This is not good for the length of the game."

The season has been disrupted because of the country's security situation and the league also stopped for over a month to allow the national team to compete at the Asian Cup in Australia. Shorta are second in Group A and will hope to play in the final, which is due to be played on the 11th of July in Baghdad.
