Nelson Piquet Jr won the inaugural Formula E Championship by a single point in a thrilling climax to the season at London's Battersea Park.

Driving for Chinese team Nextev, Piquet Jr had his lead cut to five points after his e.dams rival won on Saturday. 

Had Sebastien Buemi taken fourth place from Brazilian Bruno Senna on the final lap on Sunday, then the title would have gone to the Swiss. 

The race itself was won by Sam Bird for Virgin, a team led by Sir Richard Branson.

Bird was handed the victory after Stephane Sarrazin was handed a 49-second penalty for going over his power allowance. 

Bird also won the Visa fastest lap award, which was presented to him by four-time sailing Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie. 

Buemi and Senna nearly ended up in the wall on the final lap as they tussled for position, with Buemi gesticulating angrily once they had crossed the line.

But the day belonged to Piquet Jr who, in the shadow of Battersea Power Station, capped a campaign where he was simply electric.
