The quarter-finals of the Queen's Club Championship got underway on Friday with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez facing big-hitting Kevin Anderson.
The Spaniard had won their last contest, at the Estoril Open in Portugal at the end of April, but Anderson was 2-1 ahead in their career meetings going into the match.
And he South African came out on top in a first set tiebreaker, sealing it 9-7 by coming to the net and forcing his opponent to hit a forehand wide on set point.
Despite smashing 18 aces in the match, Anderson failed to pick up a break point until the 12th game of the second set.
That opportunity was duly converted with a backhand volley at the net and Anderson moved into the semi-finals on the back of a 7-6 (7), 7-5 victory.
He can now look forward to a match-up with France's Gilles Simon in the last four, after he overcame Milos Raonic.
Number three seed Raonic had won all three of his previous meetings with Simon and a fourth successive victory looked to be on the cards as the Canadian served out the opening set with a love game, taking it 6-4.
But having saved three break points on the way to taking the fifth game of the second set, number seven seed Simon broke for a 4-2 lead before serving out the set 6-3.
The Frenchman broke Raonic again in the 11th game of the deciding set and eventually closed out the match 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 by converting a fifth match point.
