Westwood's US Open warning

Friday, June 19 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Lee Westwood pleads with US Open organisers not to repeat the mistakes of the 2004 tournament at Shinnecock by making Chambers Bay too tough.

    Script:

    SOUNDBITE (English) Lee Westwood:

"It's different; like anything else we are going to play all year, unlike anything we've played before. I just hope that they stay in control of it and it doesn't get like Shinnecock (golf course) was 10 or so years ago, gets too fiery. You want to see birdies and gold golf and good shots rewarded. There's a danger that a good shot and bad shot end finish in the same place if it gets too firm."

SOUNDBITE (English) Justin Rose, 2013 U.S. Open Champion (on Chambers Bay):

"Obviously I know their intention was to build a course capable of hosting a U.S. Open. It's a legit U.S. Open. It reminds me of Shinnecock in a way. Obviously more dramatic in the setting but some of the elements are playing like Shinnecock did in 2004. Very, very tough. Like I said, legitimate U.S. Open venue in terms of toughness. The setup is going to be critical. They can do many things with this golf course. You can yield some birdies and make it as tough as you want to. I think we're going to see everything this week."

Now it's just up to me to go out and play good golf. I feel like I don't need to find my game or do anything different. I think if I just stick with it this week, I should give myself some sort of a chance. Obviously if you find yourself in contention late on Sunday, then you can draw upon great experiences in the past."
