17-year-old Konjuh wins Nottingham Open

  • Intro:

17-year-old Ana Konjuh won her first WTA title by defeating Monica Niculescu in the rain-delayed final of the Nottingham Open on Monday.

    Script:

Having beaten top seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semi-finals, Monica Niculescu kept that form going in the early stages of Monday's final of the Aegon Open.

The Romanian world number 61 didn't have to work particularly hard - a woeful tally of unforced errors by Ana Konjuh soon handed control firmly her way.

The opening set flashed by in just 29 minutes, but after that 6-1 drubbing, the Croatian surprisingly battled back.

Konjuh snatched the first three games and now looked an entirely different player.

Niculescu had been extended to three sets in all her previous four ties here in Nottingham, but she didn't appear keen on another lengthy stay on court. Her frustration clearly shown.

By contrast, Konjuh had avoided the big names - and avoided going to a deciding set at any stage.

She was going to have to here though, after securing the second 6-4.

Into the third and Konjuh remained impressive, dominating her opponent through the set.

The world number 87 from Zagreb had never previously progressed beyond the second round of a full WTA tournament before.

But that sorry record is now consigned to history - Konjuh coming out on top 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The 17-year-old becomes the first player to lift the Elena Baltacha trophy, named in memory of the former British number one, who died of cancer last year.
