The first medal day of canoe sprints took place on Monday as the European Games continued in Baku.

Favourite for the men's 1000m Kayak single was Max Hoff. The German claimed a bronze at London 2012 in the same discipline, and here he edged a narrow final.

Max Pimenta of Portugal was second with Rene Holten Poulsen of Denmark third.

Another gold for Germany thanks to Sebastian Brendel's performance in the Canoe (C1).

Behind him - Martin Fuksa of the Czech Republic and Attila Vajda of Hungary.

In the only women's Canoe medal event of the day, Germany took silver behind Hungary in the Kayak Four (K4) 500m, with Poland taking the bronze.

In the men's Doubles events, Germany were again amongst the medals with silver in the K2 behind Hungarian pair Zoltan Kammerer and Tamas Szalai.

Belarus took the bronze in that event, but powered to gold in the Canoe Double thanks to the brothers Andrei and Aliaksandr Bahdanovich.

Through into the afternoon, the Synchronised Swimming duets free routine was won by the Russian duo of Valeriya Filenkova and Daria Kulagina.

Both competitors are 16-years-old and they produced a performance of complete control to win by a clear six points from Austrians Anna-Maria Alexandri and Eirini-Marina Alexandri who won silver.

Day 4 continues with volleyball and wrestling into the evening.
