The match went to form when world number one Williams broke the 13th seed early on before claiming the opening set.

The American didn't let up in the second; breaking Safarova in her first service game.

The trophy appeared to be in Williams' sights but the Czech had other ideas; this forehand winner proving the catalyst to a dramatic comeback.
