Billie Jean King: "Serena can win all four slams this year

Monday, June 08 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Billie Jean King spoke to SNTV about Serena Williams' current form and her future place in the history of the women's game as the world number one and top seed prepares to face Czech 13th seed Lucie Safarova in the French Open final Roland Garros.

    Script:

New York City, New York, USA. 4 June 2015.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Billie Jean King, winner of 39 Grand Slam titles:

"I think Serena (Williams) has a good chance to at least get to Steffi Graf's 22. She should get there for sure. She should actually beat Margaret Court. She should. If she can just stay healthy and well. Serena is the most unbelievable athlete I've ever seen in our sport. She'd be terrific in any sport. I probably didn't think anyone could beat Margaret, but I think Serena can. And just remember that there were a few years where Serena was kind of in and kind of out. Can you just imagine if she'd really focused. I think she really appreciates it now more that she's a little older. And that she knows that time is running out now probably and I think her focus is very much now on the ball and on the prize."

SOUNDBITE: English, Billie Jean King, winner of 39 Grand Slam titles:

"Serena is the player to beat this year in every tournament. It doesn't matter if it's a major or a WTA Tour event. It doesn't matter. Whether it's my little World Team Tennis she hates to lose. When she played Fed Cup she did a good job for her country and I think she's got a great chance to win all of them (majors). And she'd be the first one since Graf in '88, which would be fantastic. Although the Olympics aren't this year and in '88 the Olympics were there so Stephanie Graf won the Golden Slam. So that'd be the only difference. But as far as our four majors, the ones that are really about our sport and have been about our sport since day 1, it would be tremendous for Serena Williams, but also for the United States."
