It was a match that'll live long in the memory. Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka defeated an emotional world number one Novak Djokovic in four sets to win his first French Open title.

The Serbian received a prolonged ovation on Court Philippe Chatrier as his hopes of a completing a career Grand Slam were dashed.

Djokovic was unbeaten in 28 matches and that run didn't look like ending when the 28-year-old went on to win a triple break point and claim the set.

In the second Djokovic was 30-0 up at one point in this game. But the 30-year-old battled back by later breaking last year's Rolland Garros runner-up to level the match.

Wawrinka struck 59 winners throughout the contest; this trademark one-handed backhand helped him towards a break in the third before taking the lead. Such audacity was only matched by his choice of shorts.

In the fourth, the 2014 Australian Open champion failed to take two break point opportunities and Djokovic held his serve. Opportunity missed.

But Wawrinka did eventually break the Wimbledon title holder; that backhand again working its magic.

The crowd were off their feet and victory was sealed with, you've guessed it, another backhand down the line.

A fitting end to one of the all-time great Grand Slam battles; one which Wawrinka certainly won't forget in a hurry.
