French Open: Wawrinka stuns Federer

    Roger Federer crashes out of the French Open after a 6-4 6-3 7-6 defeat by Stanislas Wawrinka in an all-Swiss quarter-final while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga progresses to the last four after beating Kei Nishikori 6-1 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3.

    Roger Federer is out of the French Open after a shock straight sets defeat by Stanislas Wawrinka.

    33-year-old Federer was broken in the third game and Wawrinka didn't look back. Winning the set before cruising into a 2-0 lead.

    Wawrinka prevailed in the third on a tie-break to beat Federer at a Grand Slam for the first time and secure a maiden semi-final berth in Paris.

    Next up for the 2014 Australian Open champion is home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

    The Frenchman overcoming Kei Nishikori in a titanic five-set marathon.

    Tsonga hails from Le Mans, home of the iconic motor race, and the 30-year-old quickly found fifth gear; speeding into a first set advantage.

    The 30-year-old was then 5-2 up in the second when a piece of metal scaffolding fell off the scoreboard into the stands, injuring three spectators, one of whom required hospital treatment for a cut wrist.

    When play resumed 30 minutes later, Tsonga dropped his serve but held on to move 2-0 ahead.

    The Japanese star stormed back to take the third and fourth sets.

    But Tsonga prevailed in the decider to win 6-1 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3.
