Defending champion Maria Sharapova was knocked out by 13th-seed Lucie Safarova at the French Open on Monday.
Spain's Garbine Muguruza defeated Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4, whilst Roger Federer's bid to add to his only French Open title is still alive after defeating Gael Monfils in four sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1).

Second seed and defending champion Maria Sharapova suffered her earliest Roland Garros exit since 2010 on Monday as she was dumped out in the fourth round by Lucie Safarova.
Her Czech opponent - the number thirteen seed - dictated much of the action and wound up with considerably more winners, 34 compared to Sharapova's 20.
In her first French Open quarterfinal, Safarova will face Garbine Muguruza, who beat the 28th seed, Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4.
It's the second consecutive year Muguruza has made it to the quarter-finals here at Roland Garros.
Roger Federer needed only about an hour to finish off his 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over 13th-seeded Gael Monfils of France, after their match had been suspended because of poor light on Sunday night.
Federer took the third set comfortably and only gave one game away in a one-sided fourth.
The second-seed's 11th Roland Garros quarter-final will see him face Swiss Davis Cup team-mate Stan Wawrinka.
Federer's record 17 Grand Slam titles include only one French Open crown which he won 2009, when he beat Robin Soderling in a straight-sets final.
