Andy Murray overcame a partisan crowd, as well as strong resistance from Frenchman Jeremy Chardy's, to remain unbeaten on clay this season and reach the last eight at the French Open for the fifth time.

Murray, the third seed here at Roland Garros was whistled and booed several times in his 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win, but overcame the loss of the second set to see out the match.

On the back of his best season on the slower surface, Murray is bidding to add the French Open to his titles at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon.

Top seed Serena Williams fought back following an abject first set in a testing match against American compatriot Sloane Stephens.

The two-time French Open champion managed to break Stephens in the 11th game of an otherwise closely fought second set before securing a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win.

Stephens had previously knocked out Williams' sister, Venus, in the opening round.

Next up for Serena is 17th-seed Sara Errani, after she beat Germany's Julia Goerges 6-2, 6-2.

Facing Murray in the quarter-finals is David Ferrer.

    The seventh-seed eased past Croatia's Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.
