Soren Kjeldsen won the Irish Open on Sunday (31 May), beating Eddie Pepperell and Bernd Wiesberger in a sudden death play-off.

    Script:

The final round of the Irish Open got underway in howling wind and rain - it was almost a case of whoever was left standing would win.

It wasn't going to be Danny Willett.

Despite producing one of the shots of the day at 18th in a round of three-under, his earlier struggles meant he finished level par for the tournament.

That was two behind Eddie Pepperell.

The Englishman shot a two-under to close on two-under overall, and into a play-off alongside Bernd Wiesberger and Soren Kjeldsen.

Austrian Wiesberger could only manage a two-over round of 73 on the final day - but thanks to Kjeldsen's final round of 5-over 76 he still had a shot at the title.

But Wiesberger and Pepperell couldn't find a birdie in the sudden death play-off down the 18th, and Kjeldsen took control.

The 40-year-old a hit precision chip onto the narrow sloping green of the par-5 18th hole.

His eagle putt fell short, but his birdie found the hole - just.

It was the Dane's fourth win on the European Tour, but his first since the Open de Andalucia in 2009.

An overall winning score of two-under all the more impressive with a glance at the rest of the field - just five of the 156 competitors finished the tournament under par.
