The scenic provence of Gravellona Toce was the setting for the beginning of the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia.

Ahead of Sunday's (31 May) final stage, the remaining riders in the 98th edition of the Giro d'Italia faced two testing days in and around the Alps.

Following a fast start to the day's racing, ten riders pulled clear of the peloton ahead of the day's first climb.

Movistar's Giovanni Visconti attacked the lead group on the next two climbs, eventually pulling clear on the second.

Leader Alberto Contador and his rivals for the maglia rosa (pink jersey) then pulled away from the rest of the field before Ryder Hesjedal attacked the leaders inside the final nine kilometres.

Fabio Aru, who was third overall at the start of the day, followed Hesjedal's example, riding away from Contador before joining the Canadian Cannondale-Garmin rider further up the road.

IAru then attacked Hesjedal with six kilometres to go and, with Contador content to stay on the rear wheel of fellow Spaniard Mikel Landa.

Aru crossed the line, with Hesjedal taking second place 28 seconds later.

The stage win lifted Aru into second place in the general classification and trimmed Contador's overall lead to four minutes and 37 seconds heading into Saturday's (30 May) penultimate stage.
