Lancaster questions Hartley's temperament

  • Intro:

England coach Stuart Lancaster talks about his decision to drop Dylan Hartley from the England World Cup squad.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Lancaster (on his disappointment at ruling out Hartley)

"Very, very disappointed because we have invested a lot of time and effort in him and to get the team to a place where we can get to the World Cup in the best shape possible, and obviously losing one of our most experienced players at this point is hugely disappointing, whichever way you look at it."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Lancaster (on whether Hartley will learn from it)

"You would hope he will and I know that, certainly in my dealings with him as a player in the last three years, he is excellent in an awful lot of ways. Clearly as I mentioned in the press release, emotional control and the ability to make good decisions under pressure (is key) and lets be fair, the white hot pressure of the World Cup will be that, is a key quality in all players and he has let himself down in this big semi-final and he has got to suffer the consequences and unfortunately the consequences are not just for him. Obviously they are huge consequences for him, but also for the team as well because he was an important cog in the wheel."
