    French players Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils made it through to the fourth round of the French Open on Friday (29 May), along with Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta.

    In-form Stan Wawrinka faced no break points during his 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over American Steve Johnson on Friday, and will play in the fourth round at Roland Garros for the fifth time.

    The 30-year-old Swiss, Wawrinka would face the winner from the all-French affair between Gilles Simon and Nicolas Mahut.

    Parisiens enjoyed a nearly four-hour battle before Simon finished off fellow countryman Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 6-7(6-8), 6-7(6-8), 6-3, 6-1.

    Simon and Wawrinka are tied at two victories each in their ATP head-to-head record.

    With Gasquet and Simon already through, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had the easiest of matches on Friday.

    The 14th seed winning in straight sets over Pablo Andjuar and will now face Tomas Berdych in the fourth round.

    13th seed Gael Monfils joined his countryman in the last 16 after a hard-fought win over Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas, seeded 21.

    Five-setters are becoming Monfils's trademark at the French Open, it was the 13th time that Monfils has been taken to five sets at Roland Garros.

    Another shock in the women's draw as 33-year-old Flavia Pennetta eased past Spain's eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 6-2 in the third round.

    Next up for Pennatta is another Spanish opponent - 21st seed Garbine Muguruza.
