    Nine-time champion Rafael Nadal eased into the third round of the French Open with a 6-4 6-3 6-1 win against countryman Nicolas Almagro on Thursday.

    Although the sixth-seeded Nadal had to save a break point in his opening service game, and was not always at his fluent best with his shot-making, he stepped up a gear in a dominant third set to secure victory.

    Novak Djokovic also progressed as he came through his second round match beating Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 6-1 6-4 6-4.

    He did so an injury scare for the Serb as he received treatment for a groin strain in the second set - nevertheless it didn't hinder his progress.

    Andy Murray meanwhile overcame a dropped set to advance, the British third seed was tested by Joao Sousa before winning 6-2 4-6 6-4 6-1.

    He will now face Australia's Nick Kyrgios in the third round.

    In the women's matches, two former French Open champions in Francesca Schiavone and Svetlana Kuznetsova put on a lengthy show in Paris.

    The Italian showed more endurance than 18th-seed beating her 6-7 (11-13), 7-5, 10-8 in a match lasting nearly four hours to reach the third round.

    Meanwhile, Serena Williams was forced to come from a set down to beat Anna-Lena Friedsam 5-7 6-3 6-3.

    She will face Victoria Azarenka for a place in the fourth round after the Belarussian eliminated Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-2 6-3.

    They've played 18 times previously, with Williams winning 15 of those matches.
