The French Open continued on Wednesday with Samantha Stosur out early as the competition heads into it's fourth day.

The Australian made short work of French youngster Amandine Hesse with the 2010 French Open finalist taking the first set in just 21 minutes on her way to a 6-0 6-1 win.

31-year-old Stosur will now take on Maria Sharapova in round three.

Sharapova beat fellow Russian Vitalia Diatchenko 6-3 6-1 in an hour and 21 minutes.

The defending champion was far too good for her compatriot on the Roland Garros clay, dominating with her ground strokes and outworking the world No. 91 throughout the match.

In the men's competition Roger Federer is through to the third round after beating Marcel Granollers 6-2 7-6 6-3.

The Swiss now faces the winner of the match between Marcos Baghdatis and Damir Dzumhur.
