French players keep home fans happy on Day Four
Script:
Simona Halep reached her first major final at Roland Garros in 2014, and took on Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the second round of the French Open this time around.
The third-seed struggled from the start and lost the first set 7-5.
She was overpowered in the second set 6-1 and slumped to her second straight defeat against her 70th-ranked opponent.
Halep becomes the highest seeded player to exit the French Open so far.
France's Gael Monfils was given a hard time by Diego Schwartzman before rallying past the 62nd-ranked Argentine in five sets, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
There was more joy for the home crowd as French wild card Nicolas Mahut put out the 24th-seeded Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and Benoit Paire delighted a boisterous crowd on Court 7 by brushing aside 28th-seeded Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-3, 7-5.
Another seed to go out was Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.
He lost 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to the Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol.
No problems, though, for the fifth seed in the men's singles, Japan's Kei Nishikori.
He had a comfortable 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.
