    The French Open continued with sixth seeded Rafael Nadal up against French wild card Quentin Halys

    Nadal showed few signs of weakness, and booked his place in the second round with a straight-sets win 6-3 6-3 6-4 in one hour and 50 minutes.

    Nadal is bidding to win his 10th title in 11 attempts at Roland Garros

    In the women's singles, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki ended Karin Knapp's good run on clay this season with a 6-3, 6-0 win.

    The Italian was no match for the fifth-seeded Wozniacki, who saved the only break point she faced in the first set.

    Novak Djokovic began his pursuit of a first French Open title with a straight sets victory over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.

    Djokovic sealed a comfortable 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 win in two hours and three minutes.

    In the women's singles, the losses keep mounting for Canada's Eugenie Bouchard.

    She was beaten 6-4, 6-4 in the first round by 44th-ranked Kristina Mladenovic of France.

    World number one and top seed Serena Williams powered her way into the second round with a 6-2 6-3 win over Czech qualifier Andrea Hlavackova.

    The American encountered few problems in dispatching Hlavackova, who is ranked 166th.

    In the men's singles 22-year-old American Jack Sock pulled off an upset, eliminating Grigor Dimitrov

    37th-ranked Sock beat Dimitrov 7-6, 6-2, 6-3 in less than two hours.
