Japan's Kei Nishikori had little trouble in negotiating his way into the second round of the French Open

The fifth seed took on France's Paul-Henri Mathieu and he broke his opponent in the third game of the match.

Nishikori then went on to a comfortable 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 win over the local favourite.

He will face Australian Marinko Matosevic or Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci in the second round.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took just an hour and 32 minutes to seal a place in the second round.

The 14th seed, who is back from a long-problematic right wrist injury, showed no ill effects as he beat Swedish qualifier Christian Lindell 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

And women's seventh seed Ana Ivanovic had to battle back from a set down to overcome Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
