Alberto Contador loses the leaders jersey in a Grand Tour for the first time in his career as Fabio Aru takes advantage to lead after stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia.

Alberto Contador had never lost a leaders jersey in a grand tour event. But stage 13 of the Giro d-italia proved unlucky for the Tinkoff-Saxo rider and some unwelcome history for him was made. He was caught up in this pile-up in the final few kilometres and ended up 39 seconds off the pace. Another crash surely not doing his shoulder any good after dislocating it in stage six.

The rare event of Contador losing the pink jersey followed another unlikely moment when an early break was halted by a railway crossing.

Taking advantage of all this disruption was Sacha Modolo, the Trek Factory rider just edged out fellow Italian Giacomo Nizzolo in a sprint finish.

The real winner though could be Fabio Aru. The Astana rider finished four seconds behind Modolo but now has a 19 second lead at the top of the overall standings.
