No overnight withdrawals to report ahead of the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia - 190 kilometres from Imola to Vicenza.

Alberto Contador started the day with the Maglia Rosa - the lead shirt - and managed to avoid danger.

Yet others were not so lucky.

Stage 11 winner Ilnur Zakarin lost a lost of time after suffering a puncture.

Although not as much time though, as Simon Gerrans.

A heavy crash left the Australian Orica-GreenEdge man winded - and without a replacement bike for several minutes.

The onset of rain made those descents increasingly perilous - as Alexandre Geniez can testify.

In the last 200 metres, Philippe Gilbert, the 2012 world champion, attacked and surged ahead.

Four hours 22 minutes ands 50 seconds for the Belgian BMC rider.

Contador crossed second, three seconds behind, and gained a ten-second bonus.

That stretched the Spaniard's overall advantage to 17 seconds over his closest rival, Fabio Aru.

Stage 13 on Friday is an entirely flat 147-kilometre (91-mile) leg from Montecchio Maggiore to Jesolo.
