Nicola Boem lead home an all-Italian breakaway group to win stage ten of the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday (19th May).

    Script:

The tenth stage of the Giro d'Italia was an almost an entirely flat 200km stretch.

A five man breakaway escaped early - and the peloton were in no rush to chase them down.

Oscar Gatto was one of the all Italian quintet out front, but his chances of glory ended abruptly with a puncture 10kms from the finish line.

Then, in a late dramatic twist, GC contender Richie Porte also suffered a puncture with 4km to go and dropped behind the peloton.

The remaining four leading riders evaded the clutches of the main group and held on to the finish - Nicola Boem outwitting the others to take victory.

With overall leader Alberto Contador safely arriving home in the middle of the pack, Porte was escorted home by his fellow Sky team mates having lost 47 seconds to the leaders.

The Australian's misfortune sees him drop from third to fourth overall, one minute and nine seconds behind Contador.

Fabio Aru remains just three seconds behind Contador in second place with Mikel Landa of Spain in third.
