Teenager Minjee Lee wins first LPGA title

  • Intro:

Australian teenager Minjee Lee captured her first LPGA Tour title on Monday (18th May), carding a six-under-par 65 in her rain-delayed final round at the Kingsmill Championship to finish two shots clear of South Korea's So Yeon Ryu.

    Script:

Minjee Lee held a four-stroke lead when play in the Kingsmill Championship was suspended on Sunday because of darkness, following a lengthy rain delay.

The 18-year-old LPGA Tour rookie made a poor start as her round resumed at the 16th green on Monday morning, three-putting for the first time in the event to drop back to 15-under-par.

Paula Creamer continued her run of pars at all of the holes on the back nine on the way to a one-under-par final round 70.

The American finished in a three-way tie for fifth place on ten-under with former champion Suzann Pettersen - who concluded her three-under final round on Sunday - and Hyo Joo Kim of South Korea, who also shot a 68.

France's Perrine Delacour, who lead heading into the final round, carded a level-par 71 to finish alone in fourth place on 11-under.

Lee's lead came under pressure towards the end of Monday's play.

South Korea's Yeon Ryu rolled in three successive birdie putts from the 15th hole and closed to within two shots of the lead on 13-under.

Alison Lee joined Ryu on 13-under with a birdie at the 15th before her namesake Minjee rolled in a par putt at the last to finish on 15-under with a six-under final round 65.

That meant Ryu and Alison Lee had to card an eagle at the last to tie and force a play-off.

    Ryu could only manage par.

Alison Lee then hit her second shot at the 18th over the fairway and into the rough following an errant tee-shot.

Watching the action on a smartphone from the practice putting green, Minjee Lee celebrated her maiden LPGA Tour title.

She finished two shots clear of Ryu, with Alison Lee finishing in third place on 12-under after bogeying the last.

Lee became the seventh player to win on the LPGA Tour before her 19th birthday.
