Katherine Grainger looks ahead to her return to international competition at the European Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland on 29-31 May. Also in the 50-strong Great Britain team are the established women's pair of Helen Glover and Heather Stanning.

"Well I have never been to a European Championships so I am extremely excited. It is nice to be doing the first things in a long career, you rarely get to do firsts. So first European Championships will be good. The loveliest thing about being back is how embarrassing it is about how excited I am. I am giddy all over again - it doesn't feel like I am starting again by any stretch but having had the break, it kind of feels like it is a new beginning in some ways and it is very familiar in others. But it's exciting doing something that I love doing but I don't really know where I stand at the moment."

SOUNDBITE: (English), Helen Glover:

"Yes, the Europeans is something that excites me because hopefully it is a chance for me to retain the European title from last year. It is a big challenge because the whole of Europe is out there and want to knock us off our pedestals but to be doing it with Heather (Stanning) is great. Our big picture is to remain a team, remain a unit and it is one way of testing how well we are doing that at the moment."
