The Giro d'Italia took to the mountains for the first time this year in a 152 kilometre trip from La Spezi to Abetone.

A five man break lead for much of the race, but as the final climb began Axel Domont, Serghei Tvetcov, Silvan Dillier and Sylvain Chavanel were dropped as Jan Polanc saw his moment to attack.

The 23-year old rider went ahead with 10 kilometres to go and from here his lead was never threatened.

However, there was an intriguing late battle for the Maglia Rosa - as Alberto Contador, Richie Porte and Fabio Aru all vied for superiority.

In the end, no man could gain any significant advantage but Contador did enough to claim the overall leader's pink jersey.

Finally, the day finished with disapointment for Rigoberto Uran, who finished nearly 30 seconds behind Contador and now trails him by one minute and 22 seconds in the general classification.

"No I don't believe in attack, only say 'I go there' and look at the other riders. But don't feel very, very good but sometimes for me it is very hard, and then I try and I think the final is a good result because Uran is dropped and other riders. OK, Aru and Richie (Porte) are very strong but I think it is a very good situation after five days."
