SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Strauss, England director of cricket:

"Well, first and foremost, Kevin (Pietersen) has got brilliant experience in one-day cricket, he's played twenty-twenty competitions all round the world, he's got some very strong views on one-day cricket and I think it will be madness not to try and get that information out of his head and help us form a strategy for English cricket going forward. That's why I asked him to be on that board. Ultimately, that may be an opportunity for us to start re-building trust, but as it stands right at the moment, for a number of reasons over a long period of time, there is not trust between Kevin Pietersen and the England cricket board. We know that. We can see it, it's all over the airwaves for a number of months and years, and with that in mind, I don't believe any team can function in any sort of capacity if there is no trust, if we don't trust each other's intentions. That's why I've tried to clarify our position with Kevin Pietersen today."

SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Strauss, England director of cricket:

"Well, Kevin and I had a very civil conversation for about 40 minutes. I explained our position and we had a good, adult conversation about... two people, without lawyers in the room or anything like that. Just a very simple, private conversation. Of course he wasn't happy with the conversation. I don't expect him to be. I hope he understands the reasons. I don't expect him to agree with them, but I thought it was important to meet him face to face and put forward the ECB's (England and Wales Cricket Board) position. I think it's important to say this is not my position personally, this is the position that the ECB feels is the right way of going forward."

SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Strauss, England director of cricket:

"Yeah, not at all. I think there's a really bad assumption that teams have got to be all like 'The Waltons' and get on brilliantly together. That's not the case, never has been. You don't have to get on brilliantly with everybody at all. what you do need is to have absolute trust in each other, that you have got a common purpose and are all pulling in the same direction. At the moment, that isn't the case and I've got to be honest about this. You know, I've... I wish it was different, I'm not apportioning blame, it's just the facts and we've got to live with the facts we've got in front of us."
