Home favourite Davide Formolo claimed the first victory of his professional career with a stunning ride into La Spezia on the fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia.

The 22-year-old roared into the port city at the end of a wildly unpredictable 150km stage; Simon Clarke taking over the maglia rosa from his Orica GreenEdge team-mate Michael Matthews.

Formolo reached the top of the final climb with a 30-second advantage and held on for victory:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Davide Formolo, Winner of stage four:

"Today we went all day full gas. We did first climb with a good power, good rhythm and the bunch was broken after 25 riders, so I was in the first group... I try again the last climb and luckily I could arrive to the finishing line alone. Amazing!"

The Giro continues on Wednesday with a 152km fifth stage starting in La Spezia and ending with a 17.3km, category-two ascent to Abetone.
