Ninth seed Croatian Marin Cilic crashed out of the Italian Open after a shock straight sets defeat by world number 28 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The Spaniard overcame the US Open champion 6-4 6-3 in one hour and 45 minutes.

With Monte Mario in the background, Garcia-Lopez will hope it's downhill from here with world number 80 Alexandr Dolgopolov next up.

Feliciano Lopez also progressed after the Spaniard's 6-4 7-6 victory against Australian Nick Kyrgios.

There was no such upset for eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka although the Swiss suffered an early scare against world number three Juan Monaco.

The Argentine took the opening set but Monaco failed to cash in; Wawrinka prevailing 4-6 6-3 6-2.

But 30-year-old Wawrinka has been out of form this year, having gone over three months without winning two matches in a row.

In the shadow of Roma's Stadio Olimpico, Wawrinka will be aiming for a gold-plated performance against either Dominic Thiem or Gilles Simon.
